A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Ancient Chinese proverb? Surely they didn’t have miles in Ancient China? They still have them on the Isle of Wight though, which is where Day One has taken me.

Itchenor to Bembridge is not a journey to make up proverbs or poems about. It’s the nautical equivalent of catching a bus from Tufnell Park to Kentish Town which you could walk in ten minutes. But promise of beer in the cockpit with Owen was a nice way to end a rather stressful week.

The sun shone. Nothing seems to have broken. Er… that’s it. No wind, and I managed to run aground in the entrance. Especially embarassing having motored past a big fancy yacht who clearly hadn’t read the tide tables or the tide gauge he had run aground next to. “Don’t go in!” he shouted at me. “Lifting keel” I replied smugly. Round the corner I stupidly put it down. Hence the running aground.

Quite soon I’ll be in places where the bottom is made of rocks not mud. I had better buck my ideas up.

If you haven’t been to Bembridge in a boat, this is what it looks like. Most readers of this will have though.

  1. Congrats on succesful first step. Many have struggled going from Tufnell Park to Kentish Town. Apologies for being there to wish you a good trip but to be fair it was only by accident.
